A passionate gamer, Michael was a familiar face at Retro Games Plus, a store specializing in vintage and modern video games, consoles and accessories. His enthusiasm and deep knowledge quickly earned him the respect of the staff—and the store became a place where he felt valued and included.

In his 30s and on the autism spectrum, Michael had previously faced challenges finding the right job fit. When he connected with WorkFirst, which provides customized employment services to people with disabilities seeking meaningful work, it was a game changer when he gained access to the individualized support and resources he needed to “level up” his career.

Powering Up: New Opportunities 

As part of a personalized discovery process, Ben Rotz, Michael’s customized employment specialist, explored the possibility of Michael using his talents and working at his favorite store. Upon meeting the manager of Retro Games Plus, Ben was impressed by the welcoming, inclusive atmosphere—and the manager welcomed the idea of scheduling an informational meeting with Michael.

During the interview, Michael’s deep knowledge of video games, consoles and accessories quickly shone through and the conversation led to Michael being offered a paid internship, which soon became a permanent position.

Leveling Up: Gaining Confidence & Independence

At first, Michael preferred working behind the scenes. With support from Ben and the store manager, he built confidence and now enjoys spending his workdays and lunch breaks with his co-workers. 

And customers stop by specifically to chat with Michael and to reap the benefits of his vast gaming talent. He even has a dedicated shelf in the store featuring his “favorite picks,” a curated display that highlights the games, equipment and products that he personally recommends.

Unlocking Meaning & Mentoring Others

Today, Michael is a valued member of the Retro Games Plus team. Beyond his own growth and success, he now mentors a younger colleague, paying forward the support and encouragement he received.

But Michael’s story is about more than just finding a job—It’s about opportunity and the connection and community he needed to thrive at work and in life. “It’s the best-fitting job,” he says. “I feel very proud and happy.”
