Hours before the Los Angeles Chargers and the Philadelphia Eagles faced off, the excitement at SoFi Stadium was already building. Lights flashed, speakers pulsed, a marching band practiced and the buzz of excited fans grew louder by the minute.
But game day excitement extended beyond the field to the guests and media gathering for the unveiling of the new Easterseals Sensory Spaces at SoFi, the largest stadium in the NFL.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was the official launch of Easterseals Southern California’s (ESSC) multi-year Accessibility Partnership with SoFi Stadium, which is committed to advancing disability inclusion and belonging and ensuring a positive experience at the stadium for all.
NFL Legend Desmond King II Joins Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
On hand for the celebration was NFL Legend, former L.A. Charger Defensive Back Desmond King II, along with L.A. Chargers pup, Zeus. A service dog sponsored by the team, Zeus also partners with ESSC to raise awareness about disability inclusion and belonging.
“I’m honored to be here at SoFi Stadum with Easterseals to open spaces like these,” said Desmond. “It’s important to me because my little brother and my nephew both have autism, as do the children of some of my friends and mentors. I created a space like this in my home as well to make them feel comfortable.
“We all get overwhelmed, not just people with disabilities,” he continued. “It’s a real positive to have a safe environment like this where you can relax and be calm when needed. Everyone should have a chance to experience the excitement of a game at SoFi.”
Two Thumbs Up!
ESSC oversaw the design of two new, permanent spaces, which are available to people of all ages, are located on level three of the stadium at the northeast and southwest corners and will be accessible during gamedays, concerts and other events.
Visitors will find soft lighting, tactile fidgets, noise-reducing elements, comfortable seating and tools that support self-regulation. Sensory kits—with sunglasses and fidgets—will be available at guest service centers, where noise-cancelling headphones are also available to borrow. Guest Experience staff have received training from Easterseals on inclusion and supporting guests in the new sensory spaces, with more training opportunities scheduled.
Eight-year-old Esteban, who has previously received autism services from ESSC, was on hand for the ribbon cutting and was the first guest to experience the room, which he gave an enthusiastic two thumbs up! Attending his first football game ever, he said, “It’s really cool. I think it’s going to be fun!” Adds his father, Eddie, “It’s a good place for a break when it gets overwhelming and he’s a little anxious.”
A Community Effort
Said Mark Whitley, president & CEO, ESSC “The greatest stadium in the world has become even better and more inclusive with the new Easterseals Sensory Spaces. Beyond the disability services we provide, it extends the impact of Easterseals into the community so we can all enjoy amazing experiences like SoFi Stadium.”
“So many children and adults experience light, noise and motion differently,” added Paula Pompa-Craven, ESSC’s Chief Clinical Officer, Autism Services. “This is a way to take a break when sensory input feels too intense, a place where they are able to ease the discomfort that can come with that and feel a genuine sense of belonging in the community.”
Summing it all up was Nancy Weintraub, Chief Advancement Officer, ESSC, “Partnerships like this one with SoFi Stadium emphasize the importance of coming together so that all communities feel comfortable.”
As Esteban and his family wandered off to watch kickoff, it seemed like a winning play that gives everyone a chance to enjoy the game!
