Biography:
Launched in 2021, The Squeaky Wheel is the first-ever satire publication that focuses on disability. It challenges common misconceptions, highlights absurdity, criticizes power imbalances, and does it all with humor. Their open-submission and no-experience-necessary policies encourage disabled people (who are disproportionately affected by barriers in comedy writing) to join their team. The per-story pay rate helps writers earn income, build careers, and thrive against the odds.
Their platform elevates and empowers their writers to reach an audience much larger than they could reach on their own. Through unique satirical stories, writers share their views and experiences, allowing both the writer and disability community audience to feel seen. Disguised as memes and wheelchair-puns, their content provides a comforting and accessible way for both disabled and nondisabled people to engage with disability discourse, learn about other people’s experiences, and fight ableism together.
