After more than four decades of impact and advocacy, the Media Access Awards – honoring disability representation and authentic filmmaking in film and television – is now officially rebranded as The Easterseals Disability Arts & Culture Awards (The DARCYS), ushering in a bold new era for the awards ceremony and the entertainment industry at large. The initiative is spearheaded by Easterseals Disability Services, with Film Independent serving as co-producer.
Founded in 1979 by Norman Lear, Fern Field, and Norman G. Brooks., the Media Access Awards have long recognized artists, creators, and industry leaders who have advanced authentic portrayals of disability and expanded opportunities for disabled talent across entertainment.
In 2010, Hollywood writer‑producer Deborah Calla and writer Allen Rucker revitalized the Media Access Awards after a three‑year hiatus, leading the program through 2025 and significantly expanding its reach and impact. Under their leadership, the Awards became a premiere showcase for disability inclusion in film, television, and new media. During their tenure, they brought the ceremony to television for the first time and earned Telly Awards, Anthem Awards, and Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards for excellence in disability programming.
In 2018 the Media Access Awards formed a partnership with Easterseals Southern California, to expand its reach, broaden its mission, and ensure its continuation for many years to come.
Now, the reimagined awards show builds on this legacy while introducing a modern identity, expanded mission, and broader cultural reach – reflecting the growing momentum around inclusion, accessibility, and representation in global media while calling attention to the work yet to be done.
