Two individuals from Easterseals Adult Day Services (ADS) are steering their way toward independence as they prepare for the written driver’s permit test this fall.
William and Jehada attend the ADS program in Paramount, CA, where their Life Skills Coaches are encouraging and guiding them through the process of getting their driver's permits.

From going to doctor appointments to attending football games, both William and Jehada want to drive themselves to further gain independence and access to their communities.
“I want to learn how to transport myself to places where I want to go,” said Jehada. “Important places in the community like my doctor's appointments or like here at program.”
To prepare, William and Jehada are watching YouTube videos to learn the basics of driving, everything from the functions of the car to the rules of the road. Their coaches are also guiding them with materials so they feel prepared for their written exam in November.
“I think that Easterseals truly believes in the message that the sky is the limit for everyone,” said Arely Rodriguez, ADS Supervisor. “So we really do try to encourage them to think big. Whatever dream they have, we're ready to support them.”
While William has enjoyed using public transportation on his own for many years, he is excited about the prospect of being able to get in a car to drive wherever he wants to go.

“By myself, I take the bus or take the train to go home,” said William. “Every Friday I go to my friend's house to kick back and relax. [When I drive] I’ll go to the movies, my friend’s party, and football games.”
Beyond the support they’ve received to take their driver’s permit test, William and Jehada have both benefitted from the support Easterseals provides. From accessing resources and learning new technology to socializing with friends, it’s been a great place for them to grow and thrive.
“What I enjoy about coming to Easterseals is that I like how the coaches teach me,” said Jehada. “They teach me independent things to do in the community like how to handle money and how to buy food.”
Easterseals ADS program supports individuals like William and Jehada to identify and achieve their goals, whether they want to go to college, learn to cook, take public transportation, or expand their social circle.
