Easterseals Sensory Spaces

Easterseals’ Sensory Spaces offer calm, welcoming places away from the overwhelming hustle-and-bustle of busy Southern California public environments.

What is a Sensory Space?

A sensory space is a quiet and calm space inside a busy public place. It is designed for people of all ages who need a short break from moments that can feel overwhelming. These may include crowds, loud sounds, strong smells, bright lights, or too much movement.

Easterseals Sensory Spaces are created with input from autism clinicians, researchers, advisors, and people with lived experience. The spaces are designed to let guests choose what they want to use without feeling overwhelmed or needing to make too many decisions at once.

Each designed space is created to feel like a cozy living room—giving the entire sensory system (hearing, sight, touch, smell and body movement) a chance to calm, restore and reset.

Guests can expect:

  • A calm, sound‑dampened space
  • Easy‑to‑use and customizable lighting and audio options
  • Nature‑inspired sounds or white noise 
  • Greenery, wood tones, and gentle, earthy colors
  • Comfortable seating, soft textures and sensory tools
  • Weighted lap pads
  • Tactile panels and fidget tools
  • Donut balls and bubble tubes
  • Optional aromatherapy tabs

Where can I find an Easterseals Sensory Space?

Current locations are found at select sports/event stadiums and arenas in Los Angeles County and Orange County, with plans for future expansion at such Southern California locations as: 

  • Airports and Transportation Hubs
  • Community Centers
  • Hospitals and Clinics
  • Malls
  • Schools and Libraries
  • Other Large, Public Venues

Can anyone use a Easterseals Sensory Space?

Sensory spaces are designed for any visitor who wants a supportive break or reset:

  • No diagnosis, paperwork or specific reason is required.
  • There is no cost. A typical visit is 10-15 minutes, especially during busy times, but you can stay as long as you like and return as often as you need during hours of operation.

What else is available at the Sensory Space?

Request a free Easterseals sensory toolkit—with sunglasses and fidgets—to take with you (yours to keep). Return to what you were doing when you or your child feels ready. 

What does ReConnect mean?

A nature inspired sensory space including wood floors, brown rug, wood paneling, green plant wall, blue lit bubble tube, rocking chair, table with two chairs, couch, and sensory fidget wall.

The ReConnect sign in each room refers to the sensory experience inside the room. Some guests may want calming options, while others may need a bit of movement or activation to help regulate their sensory input before returning to the activity or event. The spaces are designed for both. 

Guests can:

  • Take a moment to reset away from sensory demands.
  • ReConnect with their body and senses using sensory activities and tools found in the space.
  • Rejoin the game, event or activity when they feel ready.
